In January 2022, Mattel launched its Barbie Doll of Ida B. Wells, journalist and activist for women's suffrage. Born into slavery in 1862, Wells co-owned a newspaper in Memphis, Tennessee where she bravely spoke up for the inequality which affected African-Americans. She co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. Her Barbie bears her likeness and is dressed in a traditional blue dress with lace.
